Bread trays are those ceramic plates that were used in the past to pass the bread around the table. Generally they were round or oblong in shape, slightly dished inside and with a backward sloping, fluted edge. Many people, particularly the English refer to them as bread plates but that is not strictly true. Americans correctly know them as bread trays. They were in common usage during the Victorian era from about 1860 onwards reaching the height of their popularity in the 1880's following on from the religeous revival of that time. During the early part of the 20th century their popularity as a functional item declined. Often they were bought as gifts or souvenirs of a visit to the seaside and the displayed on a dresser or as a wall plaque. By the outbreak of the Second World War production had all but ceased.
